With the deadline for negotiations over the so-called fiscal cliff looming in the backdrop, the president took to NBC's "Meet the Press" to defend his efforts to find common ground. He noted that he had moved off his initial demands for revenue (once $1.6 trillion, now $1.2 trillion), agreed to entitlement reforms (reduced Social Security benefits) and already signed hefty spending cuts ($1 trillion as part of the Budget Control Act in 2011). For all that, he added, he was still waiting for Republicans to come closer to halfway.

Banks see a housing rebound

America's long-suffering housing market may be on the mend, two major banks said as they reported big jumps in profits.

JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Wells Fargo & Co., the nation's largest home lenders, each reported double-digit quarterly earnings growth Friday. The big jump in profit was thanks largely to a surge in their mortgage businesses, fueled by low interest rates and waves of refinancing.

It led JPMorgan Chief Executive Jamie Dimon, considered one of Wall Street's most high-profile bankers, to declare: "We believe the housing market has turned the corner."

Home lending is booming. The banks said profits on the sale of home loans were twice as high as traditional levels as the Federal Reserve kept interest rates at historical lows to help stimulate the economy.

JPMorgan and Wells Fargo, which emerged from the financial crisis as two of the strongest U.S. banks, control nearly half of the nation's mortgage volume. They reported a surge in revenue from mortgage origination and servicing during the last three months.

Wells said it issued $139 billion in mortgages from July through September, compared with $89 billion in the same period last year. JPMorgan wrote $47 billion in mortgages, compared with $37 billion last year.

"Both companies clearly expressed a view of signs of recovery, if not stabilization" in the housing market, Sterne Agee banking analyst Todd Hagerman said. "These guys should continue to report very healthy [mortgage] numbers for at least the next several quarters, if not through 2013."

There were some signs, though, that the boom isn't as strong as it might seem. The large majority of mortgage lending was driven not by people buying new homes but by owners refinancing mortgages, which is less helpful to the housing market.

Still, the numbers were eye-catching.

At Wells Fargo, mortgage business revenue rose 55% to $2.8 billion during the third quarter from $1.8 billion in the year-earlier period. The San Francisco bank posted an overall profit of $3.94 billion, which easily surpassed Wall Street projections.

JPMorgan's mortgage business posted a 71% increase to $2.4 billion from $1.4 billion last year. This led the bank to beat expectations with an overall profit of $5.7 billion.

Americans have been scrambling to take advantage of a low rate environment in which the 30-year fixed loan this month hovered at about 3.4%, down from 4.1% a year ago. In 2008, the rate was well above 6%.

And it's all against a backdrop of signs nationwide that the fractured housing market could be healing. A Federal Reserve survey this week found that a stronger housing market helped economic growth in almost every part of the country. Home sales are up, prices are rising more consistently in most places and builders are more confident.

Economists have been predicting that any lift in the housing market could boost the broader economy. When homeowners have more equity in their homes or gain extra cash from a refinancing, it tends to free up more money — and that boosts consumer spending.

The top executives of JPMorgan and Wells Fargo said housing still has room to recover further.

Dimon noted that there are still plenty of homeowners who can't afford their mortgages and that the bank is still seeing a high level of souring mortgage loans. He expects high default-related expenses "for a while longer."

Meanwhile, Wells Fargo CEO John Stumpf acknowledged that the housing market is still "not back to where we need to be, and it is not as robust as we would all want it to be."

The banks reported increasing loan defaults and worrisome consumer delinquencies. Both also reported high costs associated with servicing older mortgages, and JPMorgan set aside an additional $684 million in the third quarter for litigation expenses.

The disclosure of that pretax expense came a week after New York Atty. Gen. Eric Schneiderman hit JPMorgan with a lawsuit stemming from mortgage bonds sold by Bear Stearns, the investment bank that JPMorgan purchased when it ran into trouble during the financial crisis.

And in the latest in a long series of lawsuits against mortgage lenders, federal prosecutors in Manhattan this week accused Wells Fargo of defrauding the Federal Housing Administration of hundreds of millions of dollars by wrongly certifying that loans were good enough to be insured by the FHA.

Tim Sloan, Wells Fargo's chief financial officer, said the bank planned to vigorously defend itself against the government's claims.

"We're proud to still be the largest FHA lender, and the performance of mortgages we've underwritten has been excellent for a very long time," Sloan said. He refused to rule out forcing the government to take the FHA case to trial. "Anything is possible in litigation."

With record profits and a robust mortgage business in the spotlight Friday, JPMorgan seemed to be able to rebound from Schneiderman's legal maneuvering. The bank also seemed to emerge from the shadows of losses caused by the risky derivatives bets made by a trader nicknamed "the London whale."

The bank had pegged the losses at $5.8 billion as of the second quarter, and on Friday said they had widened modestly by $449 million.

DENVER — Somewhere in the wonky blizzard of facts, statistics and studies thrown out on stage here on Wednesday night was a fundamental philosophical choice about the future of America, quite possibly the starkest in nearly three decades.

The debate, the first of three between the presidential candidates, focused entirely on domestic issues – the economy, health care and the role of government.

President Barack Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney squared off in their first face-to-face presidential debate Wednesday, battling for more than an hour over the future of the economy, the federal budget, tax cuts, education, health care and even the future of Big Bird.

Faced with several recent polls showing Romney falling behind, the GOP candidate may have bought himself some added time after Wednesday's debate, where he appeared on the offensive against Obama. Romney's answers to questions from the moderator, Jim Lehrer of PBS Newshour, who played a subdued role over the course of the evening, were crisp and appeared well-rehearsed. His responses included as many specifics as the limited time would allow, and Romney seemed to hit his marks in a way Obama was not able to.

The "zingers" promised for the debate were scarce, and both instead used their time to carefully outline ideas for how they would govern. Romney and Obama used personal examples to supplement their points.

In perhaps the most anticipated moment of the debate, Romney survived the session on health care reform, which could have been a major liability for the Republican nominee. As governor of Massachusetts, Romney championed a state health care law that later became the partial blueprint for Obama's national health care overhaul that Romney now says he wants to repeal. During the debate, Romney worked to show the difference between the two laws, while Obama aimed to tie them together. Obama scored points in noting that many of the ideas that made it into the final health care law originated with with Republicans, but Romney escaped the exchange with only minor wounds.

Social Security Taxation.

Congress should consider increasing the amount of income taxed for Social Security to make the program fiscally sound for the foreseeable future, Fourth Congressional District Democratic candidate Teresa Hensley said yesterday.

At a campaign event in Columbia billed as a "Seniors Listening Post," Hensley attacked Republican incumbent U.S. Rep. Vicky Hartzler as an extremist intent on gutting the program that provides income for most retirees. She also slammed Hartzler for voting for budget proposals that cut deeply into Medicare, Medicaid and other programs providing support for senior citizens.
"This current Congress has really failed to get anything done, except vote for the Ryan budget," Hensley said, referring to the spending proposal from GOP vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan.
About two dozen people attended the event at the Columbia Housing Authority's Oak Towers, 700 N. Garth Ave.
Ryan's budget proposed transforming Medicare into a voucher system to support private insurance purchases. Hensley's position paper released at the event said the proposal cuts about $700 billion from Medicare over a 10-year period and cuts $744 billion from Medicaid by turning it into a block grant program, ending "traditional Medicare as we know it."
Hartzler's campaign replied that Hensley is dragging up discredited attacks. "Even the left-leaning publication Politifact has labeled this line of attack the 'lie of the year,' " said Noah Green, political director for Hartzler's campaign. "It's a shame that Teresa Hensley would stoop to this level of deceit in a desperate attempt to salvage her campaign. Congresswoman Hartzler has consistently stood up for senior citizens and is committed to preserving and protecting Medicare."
Politifact, in December, labeled the charge that the Ryan budget would end Medicare as the "lie of the year." But it also has said the underlying charge, that it cuts massively from the program, is true.
Hensley was joined at the event by former state Rep. Judy Baker, who most recently was regional director for the Department of Health and Human Services, which supervises the Medicare and Medicaid programs.
Baker was responsible for early steps implementing the Affordable Care Act, which Republicans denounce. Hartzler, at her campaign events, reminds voters that she has voted 31 times in the past two years to repeal the law, upheld this summer by the U.S. Supreme Court.
One aspect, likely to be controversial in next year's legislative session, is whether the state will accept federal assistance to expand Medicaid. By some estimates, Baker said, 255,000 more Missourians would be covered and the state would receive $11 billion over five years to pay for it. The state's share would be small, she said, and "a very small investment will give a great number of high-paying health care jobs."
Medicaid is vital to senior citizens and people with disabilities, said Aimee Wehmeier, executive director of Services for Independent Living. Wehmeier has Type II spinal muscular atrophy but has lived independently since age 18.
She needs help every day, provided by Medicaid, she said. Private insurance does not cover personal assistants for daily chores. "Without Medicaid, it is no doubt I would be living in a nursing home," she said.
Hensley said the budget plans backed by Hartzler would cut off vital support. "What this do-nothing Congress would do is end Medicaid," she said.

In today’s Wall Street Journal, the Columbia economist Glenn Hubbard, who is one of Mitt Romney’s top economic advisers, has an op-ed piece entitled “The Romney Plan for Economic Recovery.” When I saw the headline, I felt a rush of anticipation: at last, I thought, here is the big new jobs initiative that the G.O.P. campaign is relying on to turn things in its favor.
I was mistaken. The first two thirds of Hubbard’s piece is taken up with an attack on the Obama Administration’s economic record: ineffective stimulus, too much regulation, failure to tackle the housing market—all very familiar stuff. When Hubbard eventually gets to laying out Romney’s alternative, there is nothing new either, just a reiteration of the existing policy plaform: a vague promise to cut federal spending and reduce the budget deficit, an even vaguer plan to cut taxes but in a “revenue-neutral fashion,” and a commitment to repeal Obamacare and Dodd-Frank. Judging by this piece, and by recent statements from Romney himself, the G.O.P. campaign still doesn’t have a recovery program worth the name. Indeed, if we are to believe the evidence of our eyes and ears, he remains committed to immediate spending cuts that could well bring on another recession.

If this really is all there is to Romney’s economic platform, it amounts to a modest fiscal contraction accompanied by tax and regulatory changes designed to improve the economy’s long-term growth potential. We can debate the likely impact of the latter policies. I would suggest that the tax changes Romney proposes—reducing tax rates by ten per cent and eliminating some loopholes and credits—won’t make much difference to how the economy performs, and that softening regulation would be positively harmful. Conservative economists would disagree.
But the issue here isn’t the economy’s long-term growth potential. It is how to gee it up now and prevent a lost five years from turning into a lost decade. None of the policies that Hubbard mentions involve direct measures to boost demand. And yet, he invites us to believe that Romney’s plan would increase business confidence and create twelve million jobs over four years.
Is this credible? As far as the immediate future goes, Romney is promising austerity. Hubbard reiterates that he would aim to reduce federal spending from roughly twenty-four per cent of G.D.P. in fiscal 2012 to twenty per cent by 2016. Romney hasn’t spelled out how he would reach this target, but simple arithmetic suggests he would need to impose about five hundred billion dollars in annual spending cuts, which is equivalent to more than three per cent of G.D.P.
Spending cuts on this scale would be a big shock to an economy that is already sputtering badly. As we’ve seen in other developed countries over the past few years, the imposition of austerity policies can easily turn modest recoveries into renewed recessions. It has happened in the United Kingdom, Spain, and Italy. Romney is asking the American voters to believe things would be different here. The obvious question to ask is: Why? Like the U.K. and Spain, the United States economy is still suffering the after-effects of a big housing bust. Rather than going out and spending, households and businesses are husbanding their resources and rebuilding their savings. In economies such as these, there is a heavy reliance on the government to maintain demand. If fiscal policy is tightened prematurely, a recession is a very likely result. Japan in the nineteen-nineties provides another pertinent example.
One possibility is that Romney isn’t really serious about reducing federal expenditures, at least in the short term. Earlier this year, he said that cuts in spending would have to take account of the state of the economy, thereby seemingly acknowledging the Keynesian argument that austerity policies can lead to disaster. But his campaign Web site and his commercials continue to insist that upon his Inauguration he would take immediate action to tackle the deficit, including cutting discretionary spending by five per cent.
Another possibility is that Romney is hoping that his fellow Republican Ben Bernanke will bail him out. “When bolstered by sound trade, education, energy and monetary policy, the Romney reform program is expected by the governor’s economic advisers to increase GDP growth by between 0.5% and 1% per year over the next decade,” Hubbard writes. You can overlook the references to trade, education, and energy: such policies impact the long-term performance of the economy rather than what happens this year or next. Monetary policy matters now.
But with short-term interest rates already approaching zero, the Federal Reserve is almost out of ammo. Even if it introduces another round of quantitative easing, pumping, say, another trillion dollars into the financial markets via a series of bond purchases, there is no guarantee that this would be enough to offset a Romney-imposed fiscal contraction. Cuts in government spending affect the economy directly and immediately. The effects of quantitative easing are indirect and diffuse. Many economists are skeptical about whether it does much good.
A final possibility is that Romney isn’t serious about making his tax cuts revenue-neutral. In order to prevent a big fall in revenues, he would have to eliminate or scale back some very popular loopholes, such as the deductions for mortgage interest payments and employer-provided health insurance. Congress might well balk at tackling these things, but it would almost certainly go along with the tax cuts, which would offset the impact on demand of his spending cuts. If the tax cuts were big enough and the action on loopholes was small enough, Romney’s policies could even amount to a stimulus program by another name: Reaganomics redux. But that would make a mockery of his claim to be tackling the deficit.
In short, there is no easy way to square the circle. Far from putting forward a “recovery plan,” Romney remains tied to a grab bag of proposals that won’t do anything to promote spending and job creation if they are fully enacted, and which could well tip the economy into another outright slump. Is it any wonder that he is failing to capitalize on lacklustre growth and eight-per-cent unemployment?

By an 8-0 vote, the Supreme Court has ruled that a Colorado man who was arrested after physically accosting then-Vice President Dick Cheney can't sue two Secret Service agents for violating his 1st Amendment rights. It's the appropriate decision, but the court didn't go far enough in making clear that agents who have probable cause to make an arrest shouldn't be punished because of their dislike for the suspect's opinions.

In 2006, Steven Howards confronted Cheney at a shopping mall in Beaver Creek, Colo., and told the vice president the war in Iraq was "disgusting." He was completely within his rights to do so. But he then either pushed or touched Cheney — he initially denied any physical contact — and was arrested and detained for several hours, though charges were eventually dismissed. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta warned at a news conference last Thursday that the House was courting gridlock by trying to increase defense spending to about $554 billion while slashing social programs for the poor and needy in an effort to prevent a new round of defense cuts.

It is clear that the Republicans can do anything to hurt the poor and step on them. The fact that they are men of Jesus and Christianity is bogus and false.

Obama promised to veto any such bill and it is time for Obama to stand for the poor from the enslaught of the savage Republicans.

The republican race is still six people and the trend now is to knock Mitt Romney out.
Rick Perry is for show and promoting the Tea Party agenda and dogma. Mitt Romney portrays himself as a cool man and above the fray. Rick Santorum is rising from the dead and showing lot of momentum and energy as relatively young man. Mitt Romney is not blessed by many quarters of the Republican party and unhappy because in their view he is not very orthodox conservative.

Iran is causing lot of worries to Obama and western Europe because of her suspicious neuclear program some of the facilities are hidden under high mountains.


MANCHESTER, N.H.--The polls heading into primary day in New Hampshire show a slight decline in support for Mitt Romney over the last several days, but not on a scale that puts his likely victory in any jeopardy.
If Romney's distance to his closest competitors remains what it has been in the latest polls, the Associated Press and the television networks will likely be able to project Romney the winner at 8 p.m. ET, when the last voters in the state cast their ballots.
Most of the attention on Tuesday night will fall on the race for second place. Ron Paul and Jon Huntsman are in a battle to woo late-deciding independent voters to their cause. "We're going to surprise the world," Huntsman said at his final campaign rally Monday night in Exeter, N.H.
Here are five things to watch as the returns begin to come in:
Geography
John McCain bested Mitt Romney in the New Hampshire primary by 5.5 percentage points in 2008, but he did so without winning the state's two most populous counties. Romney edged out McCain in Hillsborough County (Manchester and Nashua) and in Rockingham County (the southern tier of New Hampshire, heading East across the Massachusetts border towards Portsmouth on the coast).
Watch to see how much Romney is able to run up the score in these two counties. If he is not substantially beating his competition across this region, it will likely set off some alarm bells inside his campaign.
The Huntsman campaign is carefully watching what one adviser described as "the reverse L." Huntsman is seeking to swell his support along the Maine border and across the state to the West. Pay close attention to Merrimack County (home to Concord) to see if the much-buzzed-about Huntsman momentum is being realized in votes.
There are lots of college towns dotting the New Hampshire landscape, and those towns are likely to be at the heart of Ron Paul's support (Durham in the East, Keene in the West).
Independents
Much is always written about independent voters, especially here in New Hampshire where they make up nearly 41 percent of the 767,383 registered voters. In 2008, undeclared (that's what they call them here) voters made up 34 percent of the Republican primary electorate. McCain won 38 percent of them versus Romney's 30 percent.
Without a competitive Democratic contest to lure some of those independents, they are expected to make up an even greater share of the Republican electorate this time around. If Romney underperforms his 2008 take, that may be good news for Jon Huntsman, who is hoping to ride a wave of independent support to a surprising and strong second place showing.
However, independents alone cannot deliver a victory in the Republican primary. Watch to see if Romney improves upon the 33 percent share among registered Republicans he garnered in 2008.
Late deciders
Four years ago, 39 percent of Republican primary voters in New Hampshire made up their mind about which candidate to support in the final 72 hours of the campaign. That's a huge swath of the vote and the last three days have not been kind to Mitt Romney.
Late deciders will be critical in determining Romney's final number tonight. The news coverage in the closing days has been all about the attacks coming from his opponents on Romney's Bain record and his authenticity. His made-for-TV moment where he stated how he loves firing people who provide subpar services only adds to a late decider's voting calculus.
Catholics
Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum, the two candidates best positioned to wear the mantle of the conservative alternative to Mitt Romney, also happen to be the two Catholics (one by conversion) in the race.
There is a huge Catholic population in the Manchester area, but be careful about equating this religious group as socially conservative. New Hampshire Catholics tend to operate a bit more like swing voters than as voters who simply look to support the most faithful Catholic in the race. These are very different voters than the evangelical Christian bloc in Iowa.
Catholics made up 38 percent of the Republican primary electorate in 2008 and McCain and Romney split them evenly. Roughly one-third of those Catholics said they went to church weekly.
Although Santorum's social conservatism may not be the best match for the New Hampshire Catholic Republican voter, if he can win over a significant slice of these voters, it could help him gain back some of his momentum, which has greatly dissipated since his huge night in Iowa last week.
Message
Make sure to watch the candidates' speeches to their supporters. If Huntsman does surge to second place, how will he lay the groundwork for moving forward to South Carolina? If Ron Paul places third again, will he offer up any indication about how he plans to crack that 20 percent ceiling of his?
Most important, watch to see if Romney takes his opportunity in the spotlight to get his campaign back on message and on course. He squandered his moment in Iowa by reverting to his traditional stump speech. If he emerges with a strong victory, he will have another big chance before a national audience to push back on the "corporate raider/out of touch CEO" message frame that his Republican (and potential Democratic) opponents have been building around his candidacy.
And Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum's comments will likely be a preview of the intense and more negative campaign awaiting the candidates in South Carolina.

In 2005, Santorum repeatedly demanded that Schiavo be kept alive against the wishes of her husband. "We need to do something to stop this unconscionable act on the part of the Florida Court," he said. "Terri Schiavo is a daughter, a sister, and most importantly, a person. We cannot allow an innocent person to be put to death." Santorum even used his position as a US senator to get Congress to subpoena the judge in the case. (The judge ignored Congress.) And most memorably, Santorum paid a visit Schiavo in the hospital when all the nation was watching—a visit, it turned out, made possible by Walmart's private jet and coinciding with a fundraiser of Santorum's.

Santorum's role in the Schiavo controversy damaged him in the eyes of voters. Polls conducted in the run-up to Santorum's 2006 reelection bid found that Pennsylvania voters opposed Congress injecting itself into the Schiavo controversy. More than a third of Pennsylvania voters in an April 2005 survey said Santorum's actions in the case made them less likely to vote for him. Santorum ended up losing to Democrat Bob Casey by a staggering 18 percentage points, the largest margin of defeat for an incumbent Republican senator in US history. Many post-mortem reports on Santorum's loss pointed to his Schiavo advocacy as a reason for his downfall.
To this day, Santorum defends his support for preserving Schiavo's life. "What I cared about with Terri Schiavo was that a judge looked at the case fairly, and they did," he recently told CNN. "And they made their decision."

But a poll by the Augusta Chronicle showed Romney with 23 percent support, followed by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich with 21 percent. The poll's 3.6 percent margin of error put them in a virtual tie.

A survey last week by the Democratic-affiliated Public Policy Polling had Romney ahead of Gingrich by 7 points.

In New Hampshire, Romney won 39 percent of the vote, outpacing Ron Paul, a U.S. congressman from Texas known for libertarian views who came in second with 23 percent. He was followed by Jon Huntsman, a moderate former U.S. ambassador to China and former governor of Utah who had focused his campaign on New Hampshire. Huntsman won 17 percent.
